Always carry your vehicle key with you. Your vehicle recognises your digital key without the need to unlock your mobile device. The key functions are available even when the battery is empty and without an internet connection.
Share your digital key with up to five friends via a simple text message. The recipient uses a smartphone from a different manufacturer or with a different operating system? No problem. The digital key can be shared across platforms.
You have the option of sharing a digital key with limited rights, for example to increase safety for a novice driver. If the function is activated, acceleration is generally reduced and the maximum speed is limited, among other things.

What do I need to use BMW Digital Key?

In some countries and/or regions, the radio technology for BMW Digital Key Plus (UWB) is not permitted. Due to legal requirements, functionality may be restricted there. In these cases, NFC guarantees access to the vehicle. To do this, hold the smartphone against the outside door handle.
How secure is the BMW Digital Key?
Your digital key is securely stored on the Secure Element of your smartphone. In addition, both NFC and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology are used to establish the immediate proximity of the sender and receiver in a tamper-proof manner.
What happens when my smartphone needs to be charged?
You can use your smartphone to unlock and start your vehicle even if the device needs to be charged. If your smartphone's battery is very low, it switches to power-saving mode. With the right setting, you can still use it as a key for several hours afterwards.
What happens to the digitally created keys when I sell my vehicle?
Before you sell your vehicle, you should delete it completely from your BMW ID. This will ensure that all digitally created keys are automatically removed the next time you use a classic vehicle key.
Which vehicle functions can be restricted when sharing?
If the function is activated when sharing a key, the following functions are restricted in their entirety: Acceleration is basically reduced and the top speed is limited to approx. 145 km/h. In addition, vehicle safety systems such as DSC and DTC cannot be deactivated by the driver. In addition, the maximum volume is reduced to approx. 65 %.
What is the KeyCard and how do I use it?
The Key Card is an NFC card that acts as a vehicle key independently of your digital key on your smartphone. It comes deactivated with your vehicle from the factory and can be activated or deactivated as required. It is particularly useful in the event of a service or for the parking service. The key card is activated by a classic vehicle key or an active digital key via the smartphone tray. An active key card should never be left in the vehicle.
