6-speed M transmission.

With a light and compact design, the M 6-speed manual transmission decreases the total weight of the car, resulting in an array of benefits in the field of dynamics, agility, acceleration and fuel consumption. The lightened gear box also balances the axle load distribution to nearly 50:50, giving the car more neutral and stabilised driving characteristics in every situation. On the inside of the transmission, innovative carbon fibre friction lining makes shifting gears more comfortable. In addition, the new transmission is even more efficient, as the dry sump lubrication system enables targeted oil distribution. This technology, adopted from racing sports, also contributes to greater efficiency and lower fuel consumption. BMW M engineers placed a high value on further reducing engine noise. And, beyond all that, the M 6-speed manual transmission is fully integrated into the other cutting-edge control systems: Together with motor electronics, its sensors provide signals to the engine speed control system when shifting gears.

7-speed M DCT with Drivelogic.

The M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic is an innovative 7-speed double-clutch transmission specially designed for the BMW M high-rev engine. The system boasts a traction-optimised automatic gear selection, Launch Control, Low Speed Assistance, as well as an Automatic Start/Stop function. It makes it possible to change gears extremely quickly without any loss in power. Two sub-transmissions, each with its own clutch, continuously relay the power of the engine to the rear wheels. The system can be controlled automatically or manually using the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, or the gear lever. Just as with Launch Control, which allows maximum acceleration from a standing start, an extremely dynamic driving experience is the result: shifting gears at high speed is possible without using the clutch and without any interruption in the power delivery. Regardless of whether the driver selects the automatic ("D") or manual ("S") mode, Drivelogic always offers three shifting options using the Driving Experience Control: extremely sporty, comfortable and efficient.

With its low exhaust back pressure, the M typical silencer with two twin tailpipe finishers optimises the performance and the environmental-friendliness of the M engine. An electric exhaust gas flap control perfects the characteristically sporty sound.


The Active M Differential variably distributes the drive torque between the two rear wheels to optimise traction and driving stability during dynamic lane changing or accelerating out of curves, when making curves at high speeds or on roads with uneven surfaces, including on snow, gravel and ice. It even provides precise handling during extreme lateral acceleration. The constant, smooth adjustment of the differential lock harmonises the vehicle's driving performance, improving control in extreme driving situations.


Traction is optimised with the help of an electronically operated device that reduces the difference in revolution speed between the rear wheels. The system, which was developed for motor sports, is connected to the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) via an electronic control unit. It proactively provides the perfect use of locking action between 0 and 100 percent, neutralising even the finest differences in torque between the rear wheels – without the tendency to understeer. The Active M Differential provides optimal grip as well as great directional stability and perfect handling, and it converts virtually all of the engine's drive power into acceleration.

The driving sensation in the BMW M2 Coupé is based on highly developed technology that was tested under the most extreme conditions possible, making the vehicle ready for the perfect sprint at all times and providing it with maximum grip. Important components have been optimised for use under conditions similar to motorsport and have been tested for maximum performance. DSC with M Dynamic Mode, electrical power steering with M specific Servotronic and the lightweight construction for the front and rear axle round off this captivating vehicle concept.

  • Racing capability

    Lateral and longitudinal acceleration that occur in racetrack situations place particular demands on the oil supply. With their motorsport know-how, BMW M GmbH engineers have ensured a safe oil supply - in day-to-day driving and on the racetrack alike.

  • M Dynamic mode

    M Dynamic Mode, a sub-function of Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), allows for improved driving dynamics by permitting a certain degree of wheel slip.

    Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) uses a variety of sensors to detect unstable driving conditions, such as understeering, oversteering or a loss in traction. When operating normally under these circumstances, DSC promptly stabilises the car by regulating engine output and individually braking targeted wheels.

    When shifted into the M Dynamic Mode, such measures are initiated later in order to heighten the driving dynamics threshold for sporty drivers. The increase in wheel slip enables the full exploitation of the car's maximum longitudinal and lateral dynamic potential. In contrast to driving while DSC is deactivated, the driving support offered by DSC still operates when the threshold is reached. The driver is always responsible for stabilising the driving situation.

  • M Servotronic

    Drivers can enjoy optimum power steering support in every driving situation with M Servotronic. It adjusts the steering assistance to suit the current speed and delivers a direct and precise steering response even at high speeds. It also ensures supreme comfort by minimising the physical effort required for steering, as well as maximising agility when parking, manoeuvring or navigating narrow or twisting roads.

    A control unit uses electronic speed measurements to determine the necessary power steering support for every driving situation. The power steering support is finely adjusted via the electric control unit, making it far more precise than conventional servo-assisted power steering systems that rely on engine speed for orientation.

    With M Servotronic, minimal physical effort is necessary for steering at lower speeds. As speed increases, however, the steering support required is reduced continuously so as to ensure more direct contact with the road and therefore optimum directional stability. M Servotronic is specifically tailored for the M line and offers three settings for individual configuration that can be selected with the push of a button.


M compound brakes have benefited from motorsport technology, allowing them to maintain constant effectiveness and brake-fade stabilisation without diminishing the braking performance, even under demanding usage. The use of various highly resilient materials results in excellent thermal stability and long-term durability. Their precise controllability, coupled with their relatively low weight, also have a positive impact on agility, dynamism, acceleration and fuel consumption.

The perforated, ventilated brake disc rings (front 380 mm, rear 370 mm) with four-piston fixed callipers at the front and two-piston fixed callipers at the rear ensure optimal responsiveness in wet conditions and improve heat dissipation. The Blue metallic brake callipers with the characteristic M logo strongly emphasise the brake discs' sporty appearance and distinct, authentic M design.


Lightweight front axle.

The Lightweight front axle was completely redesigned for the high demands put on M vehicles. By reducing unsprung mass, it increases driving dynamics, traction and suspension comfort. It also optimises the axle load distribution, ensuring neutral driving characteristics and better control in difficult driving situations. As part of the concept for driving dynamics and body rigidity, it improves steering precision and accuracy. With its M-specific tyres, the axle is a complete unit that provides improved mechanical grip and precise responsiveness in steering. The arms, wheel carriers, subframe and the two-joint spring-strut front axle's shear panel are constructed of lightweight aluminium. Further reductions in weight are accomplished through aluminium spring struts and a tubular rollover bar. The shear panel and additional screw-joints at the side skirts increase frontend rigidity, thereby markedly increasing the car's steering accuracy.

Lightweight rear axle.

The Lightweight rear axle helps to reduce the vehicle's weight, improve agility, dynamics and acceleration, and to reduce unsprung mass and optimise traction and suspension comfort. To live up to the demands put on a motor-sport car, the M vehicles' axle was completely rethought. They form a unit with M-specific tires, ensuring optimal tyre adhesion and directional stability in all road conditions. The five-arm rear axle's arms and wheel carriers are manufactured with aluminium forging technology, while the rear axle carrier is created using lightweight steel truss-work. That means a significant reduction in weight. The rigid screw joints connecting it to the body help achieve optimal wheel control. Diagonal bars transfer braking force to the body.
