0 % EMISSIONS, 100 % DRIVING PLEASURE.
Developed for electromobility – drive train and technology in the BMW i3.
Few things are as captivating as the aura of a new era. Where not long ago there was engine noise, now the power is put down almost silently. Suddenly, downtown dynamics become far more relaxed. Because BMW i has systematically reshaped electric mobility in a new and sustainable way. The BMW i3, for example, is the first car to be developed entirely for electric driving.

Because BMW i has systematically reshaped electric mobility in a new and sustainable way. The BMW i3, for example, is the first car to be developed entirely for electric driving.

ELECTRIFYING DRIVING PLEASURE.
The finest form of pleasure is spontaneous pleasure – as spontaneous as the all-electric BMW eDrive system. As you move off in the BMW i3, just dipping the accelerator is enough to deploy full torque and pull away powerfully in near silence. And by the way: the same pedal also lets you brake, because the moment you lift off the accelerator, you feel the car start to brake. That’s because your BMW i3 is recovering the available kinetic energy and using it to charge the battery. This “one-pedal feeling”, as we call this innovation, not only enables you to experience driving like never before, but also extends your driving range.
BMW eDrive: dynamic from a standing start
Rarely has a new era begun as racily as with the BMW i3. BMW eDrive was developed in-house at BMW. With an output of 125 kW (170 PS) and maximum torque of 250 Nm it is incredibly responsive. But what does that mean in practice? It means that maximum torque is instantly available when moving off. While conventional vehicles change gear when accelerating, the all-electric BMW i3 (94 Ah) completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h without any disruption in 7.3 seconds. Over the first few metres in particular, it leaves more powerful vehicles trailing in its wake.
Power consumption: electrically efficient
The BMW i3 is also setting new benchmarks in terms of efficiency: electricity consumption of the BMW i3 (60 Ah) is an extremely efficient 12.9 kWh per 100 km. And the BMW i3 (94 Ah) requires only 12.5 kWh. This is equivalent to an astonishingly low 3.50 euros per 100 km of almost silent, odourless and completely relaxed driving pleasure.
RANGE EXTENDER.

Extends driving pleasure: the optional Range Extender is located next to the electric motor in the rear of the BMW i3 and can increase the range of the BMW i3 (94 Ah) in COMFORT Mode from up to 200 km to a total of 330 km. In the case of the BMW i3 (60 Ah). the range can be extended from up to 130 km to a maximum of 270 km. The small and quiet two-cylinder petrol engine powers a generator that maintains the charge level of the high-voltage battery at a constant level so that the BMW i3 can continue to drive purely electrically. The Range Extender switches on automatically when the battery level is low.

MADE-TO-MEASURE MOBILITY: THE MEASURE OF ALL THINGS.
Shaping the new era of electric mobility in the long term meant going back to the drawing board. One of the biggest challenges with this was how to compensate for the weight of the high-voltage battery. So we divided the vehicle architecture into two separate sections. First, there is the lower Drive module, which is made with aluminium and contains all parts related to the gears, the drive system and the battery. Second, above this, is the Life module, providing plenty of space for people in the car. Featuring the first series-production passenger cell made with strong, ultra-light carbon, the BMW i3 has a lower weight and a lower centre of gravity – simultaneously offering enhanced safety and agility.
Life module
Thanks to the innovative BMW i LifeDrive architecture, the upper Life module, which is made of carbon, offers an expansive passenger environment that makes you feel right at home. There is no tunnel running through the middle of the car between the driver and the front-seat passenger. As a result you can savour the open loft design of the passenger cell, unique in this class of vehicle. This was made possible by designing the first series production passenger cell made with high-strength carbon. This reduces the overall DIN-weight of the BMW i3 to 1,195 kg, offering a uniquely agile drive with added benefits in terms of range. At the same time, the strong carbon construction offers excellent safety, as testified by a variety of vehicle tests.
Drive module
The Drive module is made with light aluminium and houses all of the parts needed to power the car. For example in the rear section there is the electric motor, the gearbox and the optional Range Extender. The high-voltage battery is located in a sturdy aluminium housing, integrated safely into the underfloor section. This is the best place to provide it with optimum protection – just in case. Another benefit with this location is that it lowers the car’s centre of gravity, thus allowing the rear-wheel drive BMW i3 to offer unparalleled driving agility. While on the topic of the battery: it comes with a warranty of eight years or 100,000 km.

DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS.

A variety of innovative driver assistance systems in the BMW i3 not only makes driving a pleasure but also ensures worry-free parking. With the Driving Assistant Plus package, the BMW i3 will warn you about collisions and is able to automatically maintain speed and distance in city traffic and traffic jams. In motorway tailbacks, the traffic jam assistant even partially takes over steering duties. The Parking assistant makes child's play of parking – fully autonomously, if desired.
Driving Assistant Plus
The optional Driving Assistant Plus includes a comprehensive package of innovative driving assistant systems that make driving in the BMW i3 especially safe and comfortable. From 0 to 140 km/h, the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function maintains a constant distance to the vehicle in front and regulates the speed, even until the BMW i3 has come to a standstill. In motorway tailbacks, the traffic jam assistant can control the BMW i3 autonomously up to a speed of 60 km/h. This enables your BMW i3 to keep in lane, provided that you keep one hand on the steering wheel. The approach control warning with light city braking function detects potential risks of collisions with vehicles, while the person warning with light city braking function reacts to the upcoming possibility of collisions with pedestrians, providing that there is sufficient daylight. Speed Limit Info shows the respective permitted maximum speed in the instrument combination.
Parking assistant package
The Parking assistant package offers all-round assistance for especially easy and worry-free parking: with Park Distance Control, rear-view camera and the Parking assistant, not only is convenient parking by the driver possible, but also a fully-automatic option – where the BMW i3 accelerates, brakes and steers itself – is available too.
